Offshore Design Engineering (ODE)


ODE (Offshore Design Engineering Limited) is an international technical service provider to the oil, gas and renewable energy markets. As part of the DORIS Group, with over 50 years’ experience, ODE provides comprehensive consulting, engineering, procurement, project management and operations support services to the oil, gas and renewable energy sectors.

ODE were the first to develop the concept of “wellhead on a stick”; they also project managed the implementation of Scroby Sands wind farm, one of the first to be constructed offshore UK. With over 30 years’ experience in the oil & gas and renewable energy industries, ODE's history includes many examples of innovative solutions.

ODE was created by Howard DORIS Engineering Ltd. – a joint venture between John Howard Ltd. and Paris-based DORIS Engineering – to support a project at Loch Kishorn to build concrete gravity base structures.

At the time, DORIS Engineering had an exceptional diving division which, alongside ODE, helped Alex McKee salvage The Mary Rose, King Henry VIII’s favourite ship.

When the joint venture eventually became obsolete, DORIS Engineering became the 100% owner of ODE. In the 1980s, Bibby Line, a shipping company with aspirations to move into the oil and gas industry, bought a 50% interest in ODE from DORIS. ODE’s ownership remained stable for several years until Bibby sold its 50% ownership to Bouygues Offshore, which itself was eventually taken over by Saipem.

ODE is now wholly owned by DORIS Engineering and remains a fully independent and autonomous engineering contractor.

Due Diligence
ODE provides independent and impartial due diligence services covering all aspects of oil & gas facilities: onshore and offshore including subsea, jackets, topsides and floating production systems. The company's complete life-cycle expertise in engineering, operations and decommissioning enables ODE to make practical assessments and recommendations based upon cost estimates that are realistic and reliable. ODE has assessed international and UK assets for due diligence studies on behalf of a range of clients from independent operators to international oil companies. Given the commercial sensitivity associated with due diligence, at all times ODE maintains the highest standards of confidentiality and discretion.

Field Development Studies
ODE routinely undertakes field development studies for projects around the world. The company provide independent and innovative technical solutions, drawing on deep practical experience in construction and operations. ODE offer a fast, flexible and responsive service, which involves their consultants working closely with clients to identify project drivers and deliver the most appropriate, fit-for-purpose solution.

Process Studies
ODE provides a full range of process engineering and flow assurance skills, complementing all elements of the company’s work portfolio.

Technical Safety & Risk Management
ODE's dedicated engineering safety team provides the full range of risk assessment and loss prevention services and has developed a recognised expertise in health and safety (risk to people and assets), environmental risk and impact, facility lifecycle risk and project risk and mitigation solutions.

Structural Engineering
ODE provides a complete range of structural and marine analytical services and supporting software, thereby being able to quickly and efficiently deliver effective technical solutions to any design brief or problem.

Subsea engineering is recognized by ODE as a key “building block” for most offshore developments these days. In particular, it is a key component for all deepwater fields. To meet this need ODE has successfully developed a specialist subsea team, made up of mechanical, process, controls and installation engineers. The Company also holds corporate membership with the Society of Underwater Technology.

ODE has wide experience of onshore pipeline design and fully understands that a successful pipeline design must consider the entire production system, the fluid chemistry and environmental conditions. Safety, operational risk and economics are the prime concerns in designing a fit-for-purpose pipeline system that can be operated safely and effectively throughout its operational life.

Brownfield Engineering
ODE has developed a recognized expertise in successfully undertaking brownfield projects. This has encompassed the whole sphere of mature asset development ranging from minor modifications through major upgrades to field tie-back projects. This wealth of expertise has been applied to both offshore and onshore facilities.

ODE has extensive practical expertise in the decommissioning of oil & gas production, processing facilities and structures and has built up a detailed decommissioning cost database, incorporating the most up-to-date market data. The company's experience covers all aspects of decommissioning activities, ranging from ‘due diligence’ reviews of the provision made for the end-of-field-life costs; through detailed preparations before removal; complete de-manning and remote operation of platforms; and preparation for re-use or deconstruction and recycling of the waste streams.
