CASP

Description

CASP is a not-for-profit charitable trust carrying out field, literature and analysis-based geological research in sedimentary basins. Funding comes partly from investment income and partly from industry subscriptions. Subscribers to CASP projects receive regular confidential reports and updates. The results of our research are published in internationally renowned peer-reviewed scientific journals after a suitable delay.

History

The organisation now known as CASP originated in 1948, when W. B. Harland began the Cambridge Spitsbergen Expeditions (CSE). Many senior figures in academia and industry gained early field experience on these expeditions. From 1960, support came from companies with an interest in Svalbard and the Barents Shelf. CSE gave rise to the Cambridge Arctic Shelf Programme in 1975. CASP was incorporated in 1988 with charitable status.

Since then, CASP has greatly increased its scope, diversifying to new methods of data presentation and areas of research outside the Arctic. Delivering modern geological research to help derisk hydrocarbon exploration while we transition to a low-carbon future is seen as the way forward for CASP in the new century.
