Final call for AFBE-UK’s 2020 Diversity and Inclusion Awards

18/05/2020

Time is running out for companies and individuals to submit an entry to the 2020 AFBE-UK Diversity and Inclusion Awards.

The awards celebrate diversity and inclusion achievements in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics arenas. The deadline for entries is Friday, June 12 (2020), with finalists due to be announced on Wednesday, August 12 (2020).

AFBE-UK Scotland (Association for Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers Scotland) plans to hold the gala and awards ceremony on Thursday, November 26 (2020) at the Ardoe House Hotel, near Aberdeen. Colette Cohen, CEO of the Oil and Gas Technology Centre (OGTC), is to give the keynote address.

The awards event will honour nominees in the categories of Young BME (black minority ethnic) Professional of the Year, Company of the Year, Outstanding Mentor and BME Leader of the Year.  Individuals and companies based in the UK can enter. Previous winners include BP and Shell.

Dr Ollie Folayan, chair of AFBE-UK Scotland, said: “Influencing and inspiring people from minority ethnic backgrounds to add value to the community through science, technology, engineering and mathematics is our primary goal. The awards event is a fantastic opportunity for building new networks, and promoting the benefit of inclusivity throughout industries.”

Sponsorship packages for the event are available starting from £2,500, with corporate tables available at £1,500.  Founded in London in 2007, AFBE-UK established its Aberdeen chapter in 2011 to support all young people, students and graduates, in particular those from under-represented groups.

More than 6,000 people have engaged in programmes hosted by the social enterprise in Aberdeen and Edinburgh. The NextGen schools programme invites industry professionals to share their expertise with the engineers of the future; Real Projects provides technical lectures to encourage networking between students and industry professionals, and Transition events coach students and recent graduates to develop their interview and CV skills through practical workshops.
