RPS to undertake environmental studies for Australia’s first proposed offshore wind project

28/01/2020

As feasibility work on the Star of the South–Australia’s first proposed offshore wind project–ramps up, RPS has been appointed to undertake environmental studies for marine life and birds and support the project’s offshore planning approvals.

Now in the detailed assessment and feasibility phase, the Star of the South is an offshore wind farm proposed to be located off the south coast of Gippsland in Victoria. If approved, the project would offer a clean and reliable source of energy for Victoria, with the capacity to power hundreds of thousands of homes. RPS is supporting the Star of the South’s offshore planning approvals for Commonwealth and State waters and undertaking marine mammal and bird surveys.

The partnership was formalised in a special signing ceremony involving the Star of the South Chief Executive Casper Frost Thorhauge and RPS Executive General Manager for Place and Environment, Susan Farr.

“RPS is excited to be able to drive success for Australia’s first offshore wind project by combining the expertise we have gained on other offshore wind projects overseas including the Hornsea Projects in the UK–the largest currently under construction globally–with our experience managing Australia’s most complex environmental studies, plans and approvals,” said Susan.“We’re pleased to be working on an iconic project like the Star of the South, which has the potential to transform our energy supply, while delivering positive environmental, community and economic outcomes for Gippsland, Victoria and Australia.”
