Transition event to help graduates take first step on career ladder

24/01/2020

An Aberdeen-based organisation that promotes diversity and inclusion in the energy sector has announced the return of a signature event that helps graduates prepare for the world of work.

The Transition programme by AFBE-UK (Association for Black and Ethnic Minority Engineers) Scotland was first held in 2012 and has helped hundreds of attendees get ready for that first step on the career ladder.

Not-for-profit organisation AFBE-UK Scotland aims to provide people from under-represented groups the opportunities and skills to be as employable as possible in the energy sector. The free event is being held on Saturday, February 15 (2020) at the Sir Ian Wood Building at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen.

The seminar has proved to be an important factor in securing roles and building the confidence of young people seeking work in the energy sector.  A survey found that 70% of those who participated in the Transition programme credited it with finding a relevant role, while 90% said that it had made them more confident in interviews.

CV reviews and workshops, mock interviews and an assignment centre are just some of the activities for those looking to make the transition from education to full-time employment. Industry professionals offer expert feedback to those attending CV workshops and provide attendees with pointers on where to improve.

A panel of experts will also ask attendees a series of competency-based interview questions to help build confidence, while an assessment encourages attendees to solve a problem as part of a team.

The keynote address, titled My Transition Story, will be made by Madhu Krishna, the Global ITO Quality & Standardisation Leader, Oilfield Equipment at Baker Hughes.

Dr Ollie Folayan, chair of AFBE-UK Scotland, said:
“Transition is always an important date in our calendar. We’re looking forward to seeing this year’s attendees and helping them make the leap into full-time employment. It is always a delight to hear how past participants are thriving in the energy sector. “
