EDPR, Penoles inaugurate 200-MW wind park in Mexico

10/04/2017

EDP Renovaveis SA and Mexican company Industras Penoles SAB de CV inaugurated their 200-MW Eolica de Coahuila wind park last week.

Located in Coahuila state, this wind power generating facility is the largest of its kind in the country, the local government announced on Friday.

The plant, which will supply electricity to Industrias Penoles, attracted a total investment of USD 350 million (EUR 330.27m). According to an announcement from 2015, EDPR was in charge of the construction and is now responsible for the operation and maintenance of the facility, with a 25-year contract to sell the output to the mining company.

The Eolica de Coahuila inauguration proves that Mexico is a country that is becoming more competitive and attractive for renewable energy investments, especially due to the changes made by the recent Energy Reform, which encourages the generation of clean energy, president Enrique Pena Nieto said.

Last month, the Mexican renewables unit of Enel SpA started construction of a 200-MW wind farm also in Coahuila state.
