Croatia opens licensing round covering central and southern regions

Croatia has opened a licensing round for oil and gas exploration in its central and southern regions with the bid deadline being September 10, 2019.

Bidding for the granting of licences for the onshore exploration and production of hydrocarbons in the area of the Dinarides shall be implemented for four exploration blocks:   

  • Exploration block Dinarides-13 (DI-13)
  • Exploration block Dinarides -14 (DI-14)
  • Exploration block Dinarides -15 (DI-15)
  • Exploration block Dinarides -16 (DI-16)

Available exploration blocks in Croatia’s Dinarides thrust belt cover 12,134 sq km.

In the area of the Dinarides, approximately 545.98 km of 2D seismic data has been recorded. Exploration of the area of Dinarides, encouraged by the appearance of petroleum outcrops and bituminous rocks, commenced in the 1950s. Comprehensive and significant geological mapping and geochemical researched were performed for the purpose of evaluating hydrocarbon potential of the region.

Acquiring of 2D seismic comenced in late 50s and first well was drilled in 1959. Several wells ecountered gas and oil shows.
