TRACS Announces New Global GeoPressure Training Course

17/07/2026

TRACS International presents a new course, run by Stephen O'Connor. This 1-5 day course, on Global GeoPressure,  covers all aspects of GeoPressure and GeoMechanics for planning wells and their impacts on the petroleum systems, and is suitable for G&G, operations and drilling communities.

This course aims to provide a review of theory and latest thinking for planning wells i.e. PP/FG and Geomechanics as well as reviewing how critical pressure data is if used correctly in the cycle of an oilfield, from initial discovery to development of the accumulation.

Course Content includes:

  • Data, definitions and datums
  • Overburden stress calculation
  • Wireline formation test interpretation
  • Pore pressure in the overburden
  • The causes of overpressure in a basin
  • Fracture pressure models
  • Understanding realistic geological uncertainty
  • Oil field geomechanics
  • Rock mechanical properties and core testing
  • Horizontal stress anisotropy and wellbore stability
  • Seal capacity and column heights, the effects of overpressure on AVO models, overpressure mapping and fault seal, lateral drainage and hydrodynamics

Session 1 - Basics of Well Planning
DISCUSSION – Setting the scene in terms of understanding the needs of an operator and how PP/FG should be approached as Best Practice. As such, it is suitable for G&G, operations and drilling communities. One main focus is how the geology of a basin must be integrated in order to achieve best results.

Session 2 - Methods of Pore Pressure Prediction
DISCUSSION – “Drillers pore pressure vs geological pore pressure and what is needed by the drillers from the geologists.”

Session 3 - Oil field geomechanics
WORKSHOP – An opportunity for operators to highlight any geomechanical issues faced and discuss practical, cost effective means of addressing these.

Session 4 - Rock mechanical properties and core testing
DISCUSSION – How you do develop a fit for purpose rock property data base in a field, how to overcome data constraints?

Session 5 - Horizontal stress anisotropy and wellbore stability
DISCUSSION – Minimising well construction problems and optimising casing size through understanding instability issues.
