Former FT Energy Editor Comments on Current Energy Policies

27/05/2026

Ray Dafter, former Energy Editor of the Financial Times and Fellow of Harvard University’s Centre for International Affairs has supplied the following comment on current energy policies…

Aneurin "Nye" Bevan told members of the Labour Party at their conference in Blackpool in May 1945:
"This island is made of coal and surrounded by fish. Only an organising genius could produce a shortage of coal and a fish shortage at the same time."

As I know from my past research and writings, this island still has ample coal resources and is surrounded by an abundance of oil and gas reserves, plenty of wind, tidal and wave power potential, as well as solar energy and experience of being a once-leading producer of nuclear power. Only a misguided, stubborn fool called Ed Miliband could attempt to kill off the world-renowned UK offshore oil and gas industry and engineer shortages of base-load electricity production with some of the highest energy prices in the world…. all at the same time.
