GESGB Geothermal Energy Training Course

02/05/2026

Date: 19th May 2026
Time: 09:00 - 17:00
Location: Burlington House, Piccadilly, London, W1J 0BF, United Kingdom
Course Facilitator: Ed Stephens, Reservoir Engineer - TRACS

GESGB (Geoscience Energy Society of Great Britain) and TRACS International will be running the Geothermal Energy Training Course on Tuesday 19 May 2026 at the Linnean Society of London.

In view of the energy sector’s need to reduce its carbon footprint, low-carbon and renewable elements must become an integral part of the industry. Analogously to petroleum, it is CCS and geothermal energy which all rely on the understanding of fluid behaviour in the subsurface.

With expertise gleaned from all three areas, Ed Stephens, Reservoir Engineer at TRACS International will be running an exercise-based one-day training event focusing on a petrothermal reservoir system that is based on a real-life example from Central Europe.

Participants will approach the exercises in groups to determine a notional geothermal field development plan including well spacing, flow rates and lift options and the influence of dissolution and fractures.

The hands-on evaluation employs simple spreadsheets and software tools to explore the impacts of the geology and reservoir flow processes on the geothermal resource.

At the end of the training, participants will appreciate the array of risks and uncertainties that impact the assessed project.

Required skill levels will range from basic understanding to intermediate knowledge, and this will be reflected in the makeup of the teams.
