TRACS International Training: GeoPressure (Basic)

09/04/2026

TRACS International introduces a new course - GeoPressure (Basic). Led by  GeoPressure expert Stephen O'Connor, the course is aimed at providing a review of theory and latest thinking for planning wells as well as reviewing how critical pressure data is used correctly in the cycle of an oilfield, from initial discovery to development of the accumulation.

The application of pressure data for CCS is also available as an option. One main focus is how the geology of a basin must be integrated in order to achieve best results.

Course content includes:

  • Data, definitions and datums
  • Overburden stress calculation
  • Wireline formation test interpretation
  • Pore pressure in the overburden
  • The causes of overpressure in a basin
  • Fracture pressure models
  • Understanding realistic geological uncertainty

Session 1 - Basics of Well Planning

  • Introduction
  • Definitions, data datums
  • Pressure-Depth Plots

  • Overburden
  • Fracture Pressures including depleted reservoir stress path

Session 2 - Methods of Pore Pressure Prediction

  • Overpressure-generating mechanisms
  • Pore pressure prediction and methods
  • Relationship between shale and reservoir pressures
  • Tools for Pore Pressure Prediction
  • Drilling data; Logs; Seismic velocities; Basin Models; Geological Models

Session 3 - EITHER - Influence of

  • EM, Seismic velocities, AVO and geopressure
