A significant development in Lebanon’s upstream energy sector has been formalised with the signing of an offshore exploration agreement for Block 8, led by TotalEnergies in partnership with Eni and QatarEnergy.
The consortium agreement with the Lebanese government marks renewed momentum in assessing the country’s offshore hydrocarbon potential in the Eastern Mediterranean.
As part of the initial phase, the partners plan to conduct an extensive 3D seismic survey covering approximately 1,200 km², a key step in evaluating subsurface prospects before any drilling decisions are made.
The collaboration among three major international energy players reflects a continued strategic interest in the region, despite previous exploration challenges. It also signals confidence in Lebanon’s long-term offshore potential and its efforts to revitalise the energy sector through global partnerships.
If successful, Block 8 could play an important role in enhancing regional energy security while contributing to Lebanon’s broader economic recovery strategy.
