The UK National Geothermal Centre Appoints Dr Matthew Killeya as Strategic Adviser

29/01/2026

The UK National Geothermal Centre (NGC) has appointed experienced campaigner and investor Dr Matthew Killeya as strategic adviser as the organisation looks to strengthen its support for the country’s geothermal sector and expand its impact.

The NGC is the UK’s trusted, independent expert bringing longstanding technical knowledge and real-world experience to accelerate geothermal deployment. From feasibility to delivery, the not-for-profit works hands-on with government, industry and communities to turn geothermal opportunities into operational projects.

In his new role, Dr Killeya will work closely with the NGC CEO Dr Charlotte Adams and specialise in engaging with industry and policy stakeholders to drive expansion of geothermal in the UK.

He has over 20 years’ experience in finance, including as partner and co-chief investment officer of Cambridge-based investment firm, Cantab Capital Partners. An effective entrepreneur, Dr Killeya has also enjoyed considerable success in green energy and community energy sectors, and recently co-founded Sheffield Energy Works Limited. Moreover, he has worked with numerous politicians and is a political think tank fellow.

Dr Killeya said: “I’m thrilled to join the NGC. The potential for geothermal to meet heat and power demands in the UK is huge. It’s a proven and reliable technology that can be deployed at scale to strengthen the country’s energy security, lower costs for consumers and businesses and reduce carbon emissions.

“Above all, there is a generational opportunity for a just transition of the UK’s oil and gas sector and, with this, the creation of whole new industry in the UK to make our country a world leader in geothermal. It doesn’t get more exciting than that.”

Dr Adams added: “Matthew has been a supporter of the NGC for some time, and I’m honoured to welcome him to the team in this new position. Matthew has significant additive experience in areas highly relevant to the organisation.

“In particular, his extensive industry and investment knowledge brings invaluable insights as we explore ways to make geothermal more investable. Equally his experience in politics will be key as we engage with government to develop policy, regulation and strategy around geothermal.”

The organisation, which was established in 2023, has recently contributed towards The Future of Geothermal in the UK, a cross-collaborative study that will be launched by Project InnerSpace at an event next Thursday (5 February), in which Dr Adams will be involved in a panel discussion.
