14 African Oil & Gas Projects Driving the Continent’s Energy Boom

30/12/2025

The African Energy Chamber’s 2026 Outlook Report highlights key projects shaping Africa’s oil, gas and LNG growth and industrial potential.

Africa’s energy sector is poised for significant expansion, with upstream oil and gas investment forecast at $41 billion in 2026 and production expected to reach 11.4 million barrels per day. Growth will be led by Nigeria, Angola, Mozambique and frontier basins, supported by natural gas, LNG and downstream infrastructure that meet rising domestic demand and regional export opportunities. The following 14 projects illustrate where investment and innovation are driving Africa’s evolving energy landscape.

Litchendjili Gas Field & Congo LNG – Republic of Congo

Operated by Eni with local partners, Litchendjili supplies gas to the Centrale Électrique du Djéno and underpins the Congo LNG program. Tango FLNG has been operational since February 2024, while the Nguya FLNG unit is expected online by mid-2026, increasing total liquefaction capacity to 3 mtpa. The project features zero-flaring technology and supports community development initiatives.

Block NC98 – Libya

Waha Oil Company, alongside TotalEnergies, ConocoPhillips, Hess and Libya’s National Oil Corporation, is developing the ‘A’ and ‘F’ structures in the Sirte Basin. Targeting approximately 80,000 bpd of condensate and waxy oil, the project is currently in FEED, with production expected to begin in July 2028.

Baleine Phase 3 – Ivory Coast

Eni’s expansion aims to raise total output to 150,000 bpd and 200 million cubic feet of associated gas per day. Featuring Africa’s first net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions plan, the project will support domestic power generation and position Ivory Coast as a regional energy hub. First production is expected by January 2029.

ANOH Gas Project – Nigeria

The Assa North-Ohaji South Gas Development Plant, a 50/50 JV between Seplate Energy and NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company, processes up to 300 million cubic feet of wet gas per day, producing dry gas, condensate and LPG. Mechanically completed in December 2023 and inaugurated in May 2024, commercial operations began in May 2025, supporting Nigeria’s “Decade of Gas” strategy.

Agogo Phase 3 – Angola

Operated by Azule Energy (a bp-Eni JV) with Sonangol E&P and Sinopec, this deepwater project is part of the Agogo Integrated West Hub. Located 180 km offshore in 1,700 m water depth, it targets peak production of 175,000 bpd using a new FPSO alongside the existing Ngoma FPSO. First oil was achieved mid-2025, with full operations expected by January 2026. The FPSO incorporates advanced GHG-reduction technology, including combined-cycle power generation and a pilot CCS system.

Tilenga Oil Project – Uganda

TotalEnergies, CNOOC and the Uganda National Oil Company are advancing the Tilenga development in Lake Albert. With 70% overall completion as of August 2025, 143 of 170 first-phase wells are drilled, and the Central Processing Facility is on track for mechanical completion. First oil is expected in June 2026, with peak production projected at 190,000 bpd, transported via the East African Crude Oil Pipeline to Tanzania.

Bourarhet Nord Project – Algeria

Sonatrach, with international partners, is developing Block 242 in the Illizi and Berkine basins, targeting both oil and gas resources from Lower Devonian reservoirs. Full operations are scheduled for January 2030.

GTA Phase 2 – Mauritania, Senegal

bp’s Phase 2 expansion of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim LNG project aims to add 2.5–3 mtpa capacity with a gravity-based structure. While Phase 1 achieved first gas in December 2024 and commercial exports in June 2025, Phase 2 FID is pending, with construction expected to start in January 2028. Investment is estimated at $3–5 billion, supporting regional LNG growth.

Block G-13 – Equatorial Guinea

A deepwater discovery in the southern Rio Muni Basin, located 15 km south of the Ceiba Field, holds an estimated 80 million barrels of recoverable oil. Operated by Kosmos Energy, the project is under evaluation, with first production targeted for January 2030.

Virginia Gas Project Phase 2 – South Africa

Renergen, via its Tetra4 subsidiary, is expanding South Africa’s onshore gas and helium operations in Welkom, Virginia and Theunissen. Phase 2 will drill 350–450 new wells and build a 450 km gas gathering network, processing facility and downstream distribution infrastructure. Output is projected at 34,000 GJ/day LNG and 4,200 kg/day liquid helium. With SIP status and financing secured, construction is expected to start ahead of a January 2028 commercial launch.

YoYo Gas Project – Cameroon

This offshore gas-condensate discovery in the Douala Basin, operated by Chevron, is part of the cross-border YoYo-Yolanda field with Equatorial Guinea. A 2023 accord allows development via Equatorial Guinea’s Gas Mega Hub, supporting LNG and downstream industries. Commercial operations are targeted for January 2028.

Tendrara Phase 2 – Morocco

Operated by Mana Energy, Sound Energy and ONHYM, this pipeline-led development will supply 42 million cubic feet per day  of gas to Morocco’s power sector via a 120 km export pipeline. Following Phase 1 micro-LNG commissioning, first gas sales for Phase 2 are projected in early 2028 under a 10-year offtake agreement with ONEE.

Igongo 1 – Gabon

A pre-salt oil and gas discovery in Gabon’s Nkembe Block, drilled at 50–1,000 m water depth, encountered roughly 200 meters of net pay. Operators including Perenco and Vaalco Energy are assessing incremental development options, with first production targeted for January 2028.

Tennin Gas Field – Egypt

An offshore East Delta gas discovery, discovered in 2022 and appraised by Tennin West-1, holds an estimated one trillion cubic feet. Operated by Eni IEOC and bp, development focuses on supplying the Damietta LNG plant for domestic use and export, with first gas expected in January 2029.
