Equinor to Drill 250 Exploration Wells in Norwegian Waters Over the Next Decade

25/11/2025

Equinor has announced a major long-term exploration commitment, unveiling plans to drill approximately 250 new exploration wells on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) over the next ten years. The programme represents one of the company’s most significant exploration strategies in recent decades and underscores Equinor’s confidence in the long-term potential of Norwegian waters.

The expanded drilling campaign aims to support energy security in Europe, sustain future production on the NCS, and unlock new hydrocarbon resources that will contribute to a balanced energy transition.

“Norway remains one of the most geologically promising and politically stable exploration regions in the world,” said Anders Opedal, CEO at Equinor. “With this programme, we are strengthening our commitment to delivering reliable energy while continuing to drive down emissions through technology, innovation, and responsible operations.”

The exploration plan spans the Barents Sea, Norwegian Sea, and North Sea. Equinor expects the programme to support domestic supply chains, vessel and rig contractors, and local communities, with drilling activity anticipated to generate thousands of associated jobs throughout the decade.

Equinor will continue integrating low-emission technologies into its exploration operations, including electrified rigs where possible, advanced seismic imaging, and digital tools that reduce environmental footprint and improve success rates.
