Trump Administration Escalates Sanctions Against Russia

31/10/2025

Today, the United States is taking decisive action to escalate the economic pressure on the Russian Federation—a direct response to Moscow’s continued aggression in Ukraine, its disregard for international law, and its failure to engage seriously in peace negotiations.

President Trump announced a new suite of sanctions targeting Russia’s most critical revenue-streams and strategic financial networks. These measures reflect his deeply held belief that diplomacy must be backed by leverage—and that the time for incremental warnings has passed. The United States is no longer content to stand by while billions of dollars of Russian oil and gas revenue fuel war and instability.

Key Actions

  • The U.S. Department of the Treasury, through its Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), has placed full asset-blocking sanctions on major Russian energy companies—specifically Rosneft Oil Company and Lukoil OAO—and a number of their subsidiaries.
  • These companies will be added to the Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) List. U.S. persons are prohibited from dealing with them, and they can no longer access U.S. financial or corporate systems.
  • Secondary sanctions will apply to foreign institutions and individuals who facilitate significant transactions with these entities or with Russia’s military-industrial base. This means that any party assisting Russia’s war effort indirectly will face consequences.
  • The sanctions take effect immediately and will remain in place until Russia demonstrates real, verifiable progress toward a cease-fire in Ukraine and a negotiated settlement of the conflict.
