The U.S. Department of the Interior today announced that it will not move forward with plans to open portions of the Atlantic Ocean to offshore oil and gas leasing. The decision follows extensive public input, stakeholder consultation, and updated environmental and economic assessments.
The withdrawal applies to proposed lease areas off the coasts of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The Department cited concerns about potential impacts on coastal tourism, fishing industries, and marine ecosystems, as well as strong bipartisan opposition from state and local officials.
The Administration reaffirmed its focus on promoting energy security through a diversified portfolio that includes responsible development of existing offshore resources, renewable energy expansion, and new technologies to reduce carbon emissions.
