Aberdeen-based process safety specialists, Empirisys, has partnered with global offshore energy services provider, Bumi Armada, to enhance safety reporting and leadership decision-making through its AI-driven platform, BOOST.
BOOST, developed by Empirisys, is designed to work seamlessly with Step Change in Safety’s digital observation card tool (E-Obs). Bumi Armada UK (BAUK) are a long-time user of E-Obs, which is free to SCiS member organisations and empowers workforce to speak up, take ownership and contribute to a safer working environment. By adopting BOOST on the Armada Kraken FPSO, BAUK are unlocking clearer insights, faster visibility of emerging risks, and a stronger connection between its workforce and leadership.
A joint study by Step Change in Safety and Empirisys, reviewed more than 24,000 observations submitted in 2024 and found that nearly 50% had insufficient hazard and Life-Saving Rule categorisation attached. By applying BOOST, members can fill these gaps in real time. 2025 deployments have already shown reporting quality increasing to over 98% percent completeness, with observations consistently linked to the right hazards and Life-Saving Rules.
Using advanced contextual analysis, BOOST streamlines how observations are processed, reduces the manual burden on teams, and ensures insights reach the leadership team faster. Leaders gain timely, reliable visibility of risk, while frontline staff see their input reflected in tangible action.
BOOST also identifies key safety themes across thousands of observations, surfacing patterns and emerging risks that might otherwise go unnoticed. This gives leadership the ability to make more informed, proactive decisions and target interventions where they’ll have the greatest impact.
Dr Helen Drewery (HSE Manager) - Bumi Armada UK commented,
“At BAUK, the safety of our people is our highest priority. By adding BOOST to the E-Obs platform, we are making it easier for our workforce to engage with safety reporting while giving our leadership teams clearer, faster insight into risk. Since adopting BOOST, we have already seen an improvement in the quality and completeness of reporting across our operations. That is why we were keen to strengthen our partnership with Step Change in Safety and Empirisys.
“The combination of frontline participation and advanced analytics is helping us identify emerging themes more effectively and take timely action. It is a great step forward in strengthening both our safety culture and our decision-making.”
Craig Wiggins, CEO - Step Change in Safety added,
“At Step Change in Safety, our mission is to prevent incidents and injuries across the energy industry through active leadership, member collaboration, and workforce engagement. Adopting technologies such as BOOST is a vital part of that mission. By working with innovative member companies like Empirisys, we are enhancing the capabilities of our E-Obs tool and ensuring workforce insights are seamlessly translated into meaningful learnings across the industry. BOOST not only improves the quality of reporting but also provides a trusted environment for members to share experiences, shape the tool, and continuously raise safety standards together.”
