Trump Administration Cancels $7bn Solar Grant Programme

08/08/2025

The EPA — under the Trump administration — officially canceled the $7 billion Solar for All grant program, which was established under President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act to expand solar energy access for low-income U.S. households. The program had awarded funds to 60 recipients (including states, tribes, and nonprofits) and was meant to benefit over 900,000 households via rooftop and community solar projects.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin stated that authority to continue the program was eliminated by a newly passed tax-and-spending measure signed by President Trump last month — known as the 'One Big Beautiful Bill', which repealed the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund that supported the initiative.

Legal & Political Reaction

  • Critics argue the cancellation is illegal, emphasizing that much of the $7 billion was already obligated, not simply earmarked. Legal challenges are expected, referencing previous court rulings that blocked similar attempts at rescinding funding midstream.
  • Senator Bernie Sanders, who spearheaded the initiative, called the move “absolutely insane” and promised efforts to preserve the program.
  • Legal analysts point out that only $53 million had been spent before the cancellation, while most of the funding remained unspent but legally committed.
