Sir Geoff Palmer (1940-2025)

15/06/2025

AFBE-UK are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Sir Geoff Palmer, Scotland's first Black professor, brilliant scientist, and fierce advocate for justice and equality, at the age of 85. Sir Geoff received our Special Recognition Award at the 2023 AFBE-UK Awards as a tribute to a life devoted to breaking down boundaries and encouraging future generations.

Sir Geoff was a "trailblazer and inspiration within higher education and globally", and his impact was felt by everyone he met, from students and colleagues to the communities he served. He was knighted in 2014 for his contributions to human rights, science, and charity, and he has won countless awards in both the United Kingdom and Jamaica for his lifelong dedication to equality.

We at AFBE-UK are grateful for all he accomplished and his unrelenting dedication to make engineering and society more inclusive for everyone. Our sympathies are with his family, friends, and everyone who was moved by his wisdom and warmth.

Sir Geoff Palmer's legacy inspires us to champion equality, fairness, and opportunity for future generations.
