The State Service of Geology and Subsoil of Ukraine informs that on the sidelines of EU Green Week 2025 in Brussels, with the support of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, PrJSC NJSC Nadra Ukrainy and energy technology company Baker Hughes signed memorandums of understanding in the field of geothermal energy and CO₂ capture and storage.

"The launch of the partnership is Ukraine's next step within the global movement for climate neutrality. Geothermal energy, CO₂ capture and storage are the tools of our future that allow us to combine energy security with environmental responsibility," said Oleh Gotsynets, Head of the State Service of Geology and Subsoil of Ukraine.

The first document concerns cooperation in the field of geothermal energy. Ukraine has significant potential for the use of geothermal resources, especially in Transcarpathia. The use of thermal groundwater can provide heating, power generation, and support agriculture and industry. Re-profiling wells of depleted fields will extend their life cycle and reduce the cost of drilling new ones.

The second document provides for the implementation of CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage) carbon capture and storage projects. Ukraine has significant potential for geological storage of CO₂ in sedimentary basins, depleted oil and gas fields, as well as in deep mineralized aquifers. The implementation of such projects will contribute to the decarbonization of production and compliance with the requirements of the European Union to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"The launch of cooperation with Baker Hughes allows us to start systematic work on the preparation of geothermal energy and decarbonization projects in Ukraine. We strive to create favorable conditions for the development of infrastructure, attracting investments and forming new directions in the field of sustainable energy," said Viktor Novikov, Chairman of the Board of NJSC Nadra Ukrainy.

The start of cooperation is an important step towards the development of low-carbon technologies and strengthening Ukraine's energy independence. The involvement of the experience and technologies of the international partner will contribute to the effective implementation of innovative projects in the field of geothermal energy and CO₂ storage, which is in line with the country's European course towards sustainable development and integration into the EU.
