Spoor and Fugro Partner to Advance Offshore Bird Monitoring

11/04/2025

As offshore wind expands, so does the need for smarter ways to monitor its impact on marine ecosystems. Our new partnership with Fugro is making it easier to track bird activity at sea—safely, affordably, and at scale.

Developers and regulators need accurate data on bird activity, not only to meet permitting requirements, but to design wind farms that actively reduce environmental impact.

That’s why Spoor is proud to partner with Fugro, the world’s leading Geo-data specialist, to bring our AI-powered bird monitoring technology to offshore platforms such as Fugro’s SEAWATCH® Wind Lidar buoys.

Built for Offshore: From Sensing to Insight

Traditional bird surveys at sea rely on vessels, aircraft, and good weather—all of which come with high cost, high emissions, and operational risk. By integrating Spoor’s vision-based AI with Fugro’s autonomous metocean buoys, we’re offering a safer, cleaner, and more scalable way to monitor bird activity offshore.

This collaboration enables:

  • High-quality video capture in challenging marine conditions
  • Accurate detection and classification of birds in flight using AI
  • Year-round monitoring that reduces operational risk and cost
  • Stronger, data-backed inputs for environmental impact assessments

The system has already been tested successfully at Hywind Tampen, with more deployments on the horizon.

Better Data, Lower Risk—for the Future of Wind

By combining Spoor’s software with Fugro’s sensing infrastructure, we’re enabling offshore wind developers to access critical biodiversity insights—without the need for manual observation campaigns. The result is a flexible solution that strengthens planning and compliance while helping safeguard bird populations at sea.

Jørn Erik Norangshol, Fugro’s Regional Service Line Director, Metocean Science for Europe and Africa:
“We’re excited to be unlocking insights by connecting Spoor’s advanced computer vision software with our world-leading SEAWATCH® buoy technology to create a reliable bird-monitoring platform that can withstand tough offshore conditions. This innovative partnership will streamline bird-monitoring at wind farms and support the development of offshore projects.”

What makes this approach distinct is its ability to deliver reliable data without adding operational complexity. By leveraging buoys already deployed for metocean sensing, the system sidesteps the need for separate vessels, installations, or manual surveys. For developers, this means fewer permits, fewer interfaces, and a faster path to biodiversity insight—something that’s increasingly critical as regulators push for early-stage data and long-term monitoring commitments. This represents an exciting step forward for smarter wind development—and a shared commitment to enabling nature and industry to coexist.

Christian Skaarup Rasmussen, Spoor’s Vice President of Partner Sales:
“This partnership with Fugro marks an exciting step forward in making offshore bird monitoring simpler, smarter, and more scalable. By embedding Spoor’s AI-powered bird tracking into Fugro’s offshore platforms, we’re giving developers access to high-quality, reliable data to meet biodiversity requirements.”

The launch of this new bird-monitoring solution was successfully tested at Hywind Tampen offshore wind farm in the Norwegian North Sea.
