OCP Group and ENGIE have signed a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the energy transition of OCP Group and actively contributing to that of the Kingdom of Morocco. This Joint Development Agreement ("JDA") represents a major step towards launching several ambitious projects in renewable energy, energy storage, green hydrogen and ammonia, electrical infrastructure and sustainable desalination, as well as deploying a Research & Innovation (R&I) agenda around these themes.
The signing of the strategic partnership took place on October 28 in Rabat in the presence of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron. The agreement was signed by Mostafa Terrab, Chairman and CEO of OCP Group, and Catherine MacGregor, CEO of ENGIE, as part of the French President's state visit to Morocco.
Four industrial projects as well as an R&I agenda, in line with OCP Group's decarbonization strategy:
The JDA aims firstly to co-develop and manage four major industrial projects:
- The development of electricity production capacity from renewable sources, in association with storage solutions to ensure the flexibility of the OCP Group's energy network;
- The creation of intra-site electrical infrastructures connected to these new sources of renewable energy;
- The development of a green ammonia production capacity. The project will study in parallel the feasibility of producing other green hydrogen derivatives, such as e-methanol or e-SAF among others;
- And the development of water desalination capacities intended for agricultural use in the regions where the OCP Group operates.
The agreement also includes the deployment of a research and innovation agenda to strengthen the competitiveness of this collaboration and create innovative opportunities.
This partnership between ENGIE and OCP contributes to meeting the OCP Group's energy and environmental challenges and is consistent with its decarbonization strategy as well as the Kingdom of Morocco's significant ambition in terms of energy transition.
A strategic partnership for a sustainable future
OCP Group, a global leader in the phosphate industry and in plant nutrition solutions and phosphate-based fertilizers, and ENGIE, a major international player in the energy transition, are joining forces to create a unique industrial platform dedicated to the energy transition. This platform will also strengthen the local industrial ecosystem by generating national economic and technological opportunities in addition to creating a potential pool of jobs.
Mostafa Terrab, Chairman and CEO of OCP Group, said:
"This partnership with ENGIE contributes to our commitment to sustainable growth, focused on energy innovation and decarbonization. Through this strategic alliance, we will continue to strengthen OCP Group’s international competitiveness in the field of renewable energies, while contributing to a sustainable future for future generations."
Catherine MacGregor, CEO of ENGIE, added:
"This partnership with the OCP Group embodies a shared vision of the energy transition with an integrated and diversified approach to technological solutions. Together, we will contribute to the development of low-carbon energy solutions, while consolidating the local industrial ecosystem. This collaboration will position our two groups as major players in the decarbonization of the Kingdom and will strengthen ENGIE's presence in Morocco."
The JDA is also considering the potential creation of a joint venture between the OCP Group and ENGIE.
