American-owned Last Energy has announced plans to invest £300 MILLION building four new 20MW micro nuclear reactors in Bridgend, South Wales.
The deployment of its PWR-20 micro nuclear reactors is part of the energy company’s Prosiect Egni Glan Llynfi (Llynfi Energy Project) and is proposed on the site of the former coal-fired Llynfi Power Station which was in operation from 1951 to 1977.
Subject to planning and licensing approvals, the first pioneering plant would become operational in 2027 and the project as a whole will produce the equivalent energy consumed by around 244,000 UK homes each year.
Last Energy has stated that it was on a mission to 'productise' nuclear development and its PWR-20 reactor is comprised of 'a few dozen' modules which can be assembled 'like a Lego kit'.
The PWR-20 can be manufactured, transported and assembled within 24 months and is designed to serve private industrial customers.
