Discover Maths and Science Fun For All Ages at ASC

07/02/2024

Aberdeen Science Centre is offering fun for the whole family, alongside free entry for over 55s, during the upcoming mid term school break.

From Saturday 10th – Wednesday 14th February, Aberdeen residents aged 55 and over will be able to enjoy Aberdeen Science Centre’s diverse range of exhibits free of charge, thanks to generous funding from third sector organisation, ACVO.

During this time, visitors can also take part in Aberdeen Science Centre's Maths in Motion-themed activities, which are suitable for all ages.

These activities, which are sponsored by Maths Week Scotland, will encourage visitors to explore the relationship between maths and motion with a special Moving Pictures Workshop.

The workshop will introduce participants to the fundamentals of stop-motion animation as they discover how the human eye perceives a progressing series of still images as movement, culminating in the creation of their very own stop-motion movies.

Alongside the workshop, there will also be a variety of fun drop-in maths challenges available across the centre’s exhibition floor.

Younger visitors can take part in a special maths-themed story session in the designated Under-6s zone.

During the mid term break, free entry for over 55s will be available to walk-in visitors only, and prebooked visits for over 55s during this time cannot be refunded. For those under 55, the standard entry price will apply.

Calli Buchanan, public programme co-ordinator at Aberdeen Science Centre, said:
“The days off are the perfect chance for families to spend time together, but just because the schools are closed, it doesn’t mean that everyone can't learn something new. During mid term, we will be offering free entry to those aged 55 and over. We ran free 55+ sessions in 2023 which were really well received, and we hope these additional sessions will encourage even more people to explore the power of curiosity.

“Fun for all members of the family can be had at our centre over mid term with our fantastic range of exhibits and Maths in Motion-themed activities that will explore the relationship between maths and movement. Visitors can enjoy fun games and challenges and take part in our special workshop that will see them create their own stop-motion films, from designing characters and scenery to crafting a unique story.”

Based on Constitution Street near Aberdeen beach, ASC is home to almost 65 interactive exhibits, allowing people of all ages to discover topics including Space, Energy, Life Sciences, Engineering, and much more.

Open seven days a week, Aberdeen Science Centre also offers exclusive venue hire as well as room hire for corporate, social and private events.
