Equinor has engaged Havkraft to conduct a study that will investigate the feasibility of integrating Havkraft wave energy converters (H-WEC) on Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODUs).

The goal being to significantly reduce operational CO2 emissions and promoting sustainable development within the industry, according to a recent press release from Havkraft.

Green power to drilling units

Wave power is the capture of energy from wind waves to perform useful work, such as generating electricity, desalinating water, or pumping water. A wave energy converter (WEC) is a device designed specifically for this purpose.

Havkraft's Wave Energy Converter (H-WEC) is a device that transforms the kinetic energy of rotating ocean waves into impactful water pistons, where the secret lies in their patented multi-chamber system which allows it to capture a wide spectrum of wave frequencies.

Equinor is now eager to see if the H-WEC can be a sustainable solution to power the mobile offshore drilling units (MODUs).
