Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG) launched its third annual calendar photography competition earlier this summer, and with a few weeks to go until the deadline, there is still time to submit a winning entry.

Sponsored by the Broadshore and Bellrock floating offshore wind projects, the competition theme is the Art of Renewable Energy, and the aim is to showcase positive images of renewable energy installations within Scottish communities, highlighting Scotland’s diverse contribution to the energy transition and carbon reduction.

Open to all ages, the contest looks for amateur photographers to submit images that capture renewable energy in action and judges will select the top 13 entries for inclusion in AREG’s 2024 calendar.

Photographs can show any type or use of renewable energy, whether that be wind, wave, hydrogen, or solar power, electric vehicles, bikes, or anything else the photographers choose.

Entries can illustrate how renewable energy is integrated into communities, households, or public buildings and spaces and we welcome entries that showcase renewable energy within the landscape, seascape, and communities, highlighting energy infrastructures as they capture nature’s power and provide lower carbon energy.

“Renewable energy in its various guises is essential as we move through the energy transition towards a net zero future,” said AREG chair Jean Morrison. “Through the photo competition, we aim to showcase the positive aspects of this for people and the planet, and with so many sources to choose from, it’s always intriguing to see how photographers choose to reflect different aspects of the energy mix, how it is used and how it can help address climate change.

“We’re already seeing strong entries coming through this year and we are keen to encourage young people to get involved. Details of the competition have been shared with schools, colleges, and universities across the region and we hope teachers see this as a good opportunity to enhance the climate change education they already provide.”

The calendar competition is sponsored by the BlueFloat Energy | Renantis Partnership’s Broadshore and Bellrock floating offshore wind projects. The Partnership, based in Edinburgh, is developing several floating offshore wind projects in Scotland including Broadshore north of Fraserburgh, Bellrock east of Aberdeen, and Stromar east of Wick, in collaboration with Ørsted. David Robertson, project director said:  

“The energy transition is a tremendous opportunity for Scotland and the photography competition is a fantastic way to capture renewable energy in action as it increasingly becomes part of people’s everyday lives. Previous winners produced stunning images and we’re very much looking forward to seeing this year’s entries.”
