Energy Sector to Honor Senegal’s President Sall at Africa Energy Week in Cape Town

11/09/2023

Senegalese President Macky Sall

This year, the African Energy Chamber (AEC) will have the privilege of honoring Senegalese President Macky Sall for his exceptional leadership and unwavering advocacy for the energy sector in Africa.

President Sall is not only a respected leader in his own country but also a global champion for African issues. He has served as the chairman of the African Union and has consistently advocated for African priorities on the international stage. However, one of the most remarkable aspects of President Sall's leadership is his dedication to the energy industry in Africa.

In a time when foreign voices are pressuring Africa to adhere to energy transition timetables that may not align with our continent's best interests, President Sall has steadfastly defended what is right for Africa. His advocacy for our continent's energy needs was notably showcased at the 2022 G20 summit and the COP27 climate conference.

President Sall has consistently called for equitable African representation at international energy forums where decisions that profoundly affect African lives are made. He believes that African nations should not remain on the sidelines but should have a significant voice in energy policy discussions. His call for permanent seats on the UN Security Council reflects his commitment to ensuring that 1.4 billion Africans have representation in decisions that impact them daily.

As Chairman of the African Union in 2022, President Sall emphasized the importance of international energy-related partnerships listening to African voices. He also advocated for a greater African presence in the G20, where South Africa currently represents the continent.

President Sall has boldly asserted that continued extraction and utilization of African oil and gas resources are vital for economic development, energy security, and industrialization. He has emphasized Africa's transition to renewables at a pace that best serves its people and economies. Furthermore, he has pointed out the inconsistency of wealthy nations denying Africa access to the fossil fuels they used for industrialization, while over 600 million Africans still lack access to electricity.

Under President Sall's leadership, Senegal's energy sector has witnessed transformative growth. His visionary collaboration with leaders from other nations, such as German Chancellor Olaf Schultz, has opened doors for gas development and LNG projects in Senegal. Senegal's involvement in projects like the Greater Tortue/Ahmeyim (GTA) natural gas project is set to boost regional GDP and contribute to a just energy transition.

Senegal is also making significant strides towards renewable energy production through projects like the Senergy 2 solar project and the Taiba N'Diaye wind farm. President Sall's leadership in the Plan for an Emerging Senegal (PES) has attracted global investment and paved the way for energy independence.

Senegal's energy industry serves as a model for every African nation seeking to harness its oil and gas resources for economic growth, improved quality of life, and a just transition to renewables.

AEC are thrilled to announce that President Macky Sall will be the opening keynote speaker at Africa Energy Week 2023. His address is expected to set the tone for the discussions, deal-making, and initiatives that will shape the future of energy in Africa, just as his leadership has shaped Senegal's energy progress.
