Training: Geochemistry Concepts and Applications

16/08/2023

Merlin has developed a one day applied geochemistry training course for subsurface professionals. The course is taught by our Principal Geochemist Paul Taylor. It explains the core concepts of geochemistry and shows how the technology can be applied to reduce cost and improve efficiency in E&P operations across the full lifecycle; from frontier exploration to field abandonment, and every stage in between. Whilst the focus is on practical application of geochemical technology, fundamental concepts will be explained and jargon demystified.

Overview

1. Petroleum Systems Evaluation

  • Geological controls on fluid distributions and character.

2. Fundamentals of Oil and Gas Geochemistry

  • Sampling and Analysis programs.
  • Basic interpretations and data QC.
  • Leveraging PVT analysis data.

3. Exploration Applications

  • Oil correlations and inversion.
  • Hydrocarbon phase and fluid property prediction.
  • Charge risking.
  • Contaminants (H2S, CO2, Hg, N2).
  • Surface geochemistry best (and worse) practice.

4. Appraisal and Development Applications

  • Reservoir continuity assessment.
  • Compositional and non-equilibrium fluid gradients.
  • Fluid property and contaminant mapping.
  • Flow assurance support.

5. Production Applications

  • Oil and gas allocation in wells and flow lines.
  • Time lapse studies and dynamic flow assessment.
  • Well integrity and abandonment support.

A robust understanding of fluid character is a fundamental requirement for optimal profitability at all stages of the exploration and production life cycle.

Modern geochemical workflows and analysis technology can provide unique insights into the workings of petroleum systems, distributions of fluids within petroleum reservoirs, and the production behaviour of reservoirs. These insights complement and enhance established geoscience, petrophysical and engineering workflows. What’s more, workflows can often be applied using existing sample materials or on samples collected during routine operations.

Merlin has developed an applied geochemistry training course that explains the core concepts (and sometimes confusing terminology) of geochemistry and shows how the technology can be applied to reduce cost and improve efficiency in E&P operations.
