TechFest’s Activity Weekend takes place at RGU this weekend

01/06/2023

Visitors to the popular TechFest's Activity Weekend this weekend are being invited to go ‘In for a Penny, in for a Pound’, with admission just £1 for adults and just 1p for children.

The STEM charity’s Activity Weekend is being held at Robert Gordon University and has something for everyone. It is supported by joint principal sponsors Shell and bp and will take place over Saturday and Sunday, June 3-4 from 9.30am to 4pm each day.

Younger visitors should bring along a teddy bear or soft toy to be checked out at the Teddy Bear’s Hospital. They will also have the chance to watch, and possibly assist, the doctors in the operating theatre as they help a teddy bear to get better.

The Medical School Clinical Skills Team will also be on hand to showcase the latest state of the art technology which is used to train the healthcare professionals of the future. This includes their Human Patient Simulators and 360-degree cameras.

Visitors to the Activity Weekend will also be able to find out more about the energy transition. Hands-on interactive experiments will provide a chance to learn about different energy sources, and the trade-offs associated with each.

Energy of a different sort will be being burned off on the Tough Monkees obstacle course. The team from The Movement Bothy will be on site with ten large obstacles, all designed to challenge basic athletic skills in a fun and playful environment.

Jenny Taylor, Festival Manager of STEM charity, TechFest, said:
“The Activity Weekend will give children and adults from across the North-east of Scotland the chance to take part in an exciting line-up of science, technology, engineering and mathematics workshops and shows.

“There will be over 20 hands-on workshops, shows and demonstrations for all ages to enjoy. There’s no need to pre-book, entry is just £1 for adults and 1p for children.”

Jenny added:
“The Activity Weekend is one of the most popular events on our calendar. It’s going to be a fun filled two days. We are very grateful to our joint principal sponsors Shell and bp for their valued, continued backing for our STEM programmes, as well as our other supporters and partners, without whose input it would not be possible to offer these sessions.”

A number of energy companies are also supporting the programme, including Apache, North Sea Transition Authority, Harbour Energy, TAQA, Subsea 7, Fugro, and Equinor as well as Skills Development Scotland’s My World of Work team and other partners.

No booking is required but only cash will be accepted on the door. To find out more about the Activity Weekend visit https://techfest.org.uk/festival/activity-weekend

TechFest is an Aberdeen-based charity which aims to engage young people in the four main STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and encourage them to go on to follow a career which utilises these skills by demonstrating that they are both fun and relevant in day-to-day life.
