RWE becomes the sole owner of the 1.6 gigawatt North Sea cluster

29/05/2023

  • RWE will take over all of Northland Power's shares in the planned offshore wind cluster
  • Significant synergies expected in development, construction and operation
  • Six terawatt hours of green electricity generation per year should  contribute to the decarbonization of industry

RWE is now the sole owner of a 1.6 gigawatt (GW) cluster of offshore wind farms in the German North Sea. The North Sea cluster consists of four areas north of the island of Juist and has so far been developed together with the Canadian company Northland Power, whose shares (49%) have been bought by RWE. The parties have agreed on a purchase price of around 35 million euros.

Sven Utermöhlen, CEO RWE Offshore Wind:
“We are now the sole owner of the North Sea cluster. We are thus further expanding our position as one of the world's leading companies in the offshore wind sector. It is the first German offshore wind cluster in the gigawatt range. When the four wind farms go into operation in 2027 and 2029, they will generate around six terawatt hours of green electricity annually. In doing so, we support the decarbonization of industry in our home market in particular. And we want even more: RWE will therefore also take part in the German offshore wind auctions this summer.”

The North Sea Cluster will be built in two phases (North Sea Cluster A and B). Two wind farms (N-3.8 and N-3.7, called Nordseecluster A) with a total output of 660 megawatts (MW) are currently in the approval phase. For Nordseecluster A, work at sea is expected to start in 2025, with commercial operation scheduled to start in early 2027. The two wind farms (N-3.6 and N-3.5) of the second phase (Nordseecluster B) should provide an additional capacity of 900 MW from 2029. RWE is planning to exercise its existing entry rights for both locations in North Sea Cluster B as part of the tenders due this year. Preferred suppliers for main components have already been selected for all four locations.

Due to the size of the cluster, RWE wants to achieve significant synergy effects in the development, construction and subsequent operation of the four wind farms. In addition, RWE will offer its industrial and municipal customers tailor-made energy solutions and thus support them on their way to decarbonization.

The Nordseecluster will be built in the immediate vicinity of the existing 332 MW Nordsee One wind farm , which RWE will continue to operate together with Northland Power.
