Commentary on the UK's first Carbon Storage licence round announcement

19/05/2023

The UK's first Carbon Storage licence round results have been announced. 26 bids were submitted from 19 companies across 13 areas. Of those, a total of 20 licence areas have been awarded to 12 companies.

The near-term goal is to store 20-30 million tonnes of CO2 per year through CCS by 2030 with an expectation that over 100 licences will be awarded by 2050. 1st Subsurface - TROVE think these targets are unlikely to be reached unless the process is streamlined and red tape is removed.

Companies expected to have been awarded the licences include EnQuest, Spirit, Neptune, Taqa and the Acorn project.
