Shell may quit Nord Stream 2 project in case of US sanctions

Shell may consider withdrawing from the Nord Stream 2 project if the United States imposes sanctions on project participants, Shell head Ben van Berden said during his speech at the Russian Energy Week international forum.

“We need to act in the interests of our shareholders. If the US imposes sanctions on us for participating in the project, then we will have no choice,” he said.

Earlier, the US State Department spokesman Heather Nauert said that sanctions could be imposed on companies working with Russia in the area of pipelines and energy supplies under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA). In particular, it concerned Nord Stream - 2.

At the same time in mid-September, Trump said that the United States is not going to impose sanctions against the companies participating in this project.

Nord Stream 2 is a gas pipeline from Russia to Germany acoss the Baltic Sea with a length of 1,220 km and a capacity of 55 billion cubic meters per year. It will directly link the Russian resource base and European consumers.

On September 5, Nord Stream 2 AG, the operator of the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline, began laying gas pipelines in the exclusive economic zone of Finland. It is expected that the construction of the pipeline will be completed at the end of 2019.
