NorSea turns to RAYVN for a more effective incident management

19/01/2023

NorSea emergency preparedness organization is organized in different levels. The first level is industrial safety team, they are out in the field. Their main focus is to perform first aid and reduce damage on site. The second level is their tactical level, Emergency response team level 2 is responsible for notifying corporate resources if they need to handle the incident.

Prior to NorSea starting to use RAYVN, their emergency response team was using e-mail, traditional radio communication, and phone calls to communicate between each other. NorSea wanted to be able to provide their decision makers with better documentation of how they were handling incidents, and for a mean of internal evaluation. This is difficult to do while using a number of different communication channels.

Pål Thorstensen (pictured above), Security Manager NorSea AS, describes their challenge as: “Problems with communication between multiple teams at multiple locations made us look for a system. We needed a system that made it possible to share real-time information to all resources instantly”.

Experience with RAYVN

Having evaluated several other incident management tools, RAYVN proved to have almost no cost when it came to implementation in the organization. While other tools require sending personnel for training, RAYVN was so user-friendly and intuitive that the personnel learned to use it effectively without any prior training. “You cannot find any tool that can match RAYVN's speed and ease of implementation”, Pål claims.

During implementation, Pål and his colleagues added their preparedness plans to RAYVN and set up their checklists for the specific plans. The setup was done in a matter of hours. “We have spent almost no time on training! The tool is so user-friendly that our personnel has not needed to attend any course to get operational with RAYVN. This is quite unusual for critical tools like this”.

NorSea now quickly notifies and mobilizes personnel during incidents. At the same time, they also get an instant overview of what personnel is available. All personnel that engages in the emergency, get the same information. This significantly reduces the amount of communication needed. By using RAYVN, NorSea emergency preparedness organization sets a new standard for communicating with all team members. As Thorstensen states “RAYVN gives every person involved the same information, we have full control over all resources available and we can notify anybody in RAYVN's flexible notification system.”

After an incident, NorSea has to file complete documentation of how the incident was managed. This used to require a tremendous amount of information gathering, systematizing and recapturing of what happened and what was done. Not anymore, states Thorstensen: “After incidents, we are required to document every aspect of the incident in our nonconformance systems. The RAYVN report contains all information that is required, which means that when an incident is resolved, our documentation is immediately ready.“ The report RAYVN provides is built as a chronological representation of all logged events and communication that happened during the incident, marked with both a timestamp and the name of the reporter.
