Finding Petroleum: The Caribbean - a Frontier Exploration Hotspot

08/09/2022

Undoubtedly, the Caribbean has arrived as a key area for future oil and gas exploration.

The discovery of billions of barrels of oil offshore Guyana by ExxonMobil and partners since 2015 has focused the attention of the geological community on the eastern boundary of the Caribbean and South American tectonic plates.

And the recent announcement by EcoPetrol of promising gas discoveries offshore Colombia defines a ‘complete set’ along the southern margin of the Caribbean – Colombia=>Venezuela=>Trinidad=>Guyana.

Which brings us to two questions that the November 4th Finding Petroleum webinar will focus on:

Firstly, what about the western side of the Caribbean, from Nicaragua round to Jamaica? Chris Matchette-Downes of the long term player CaribX will address this region……

And secondly, could there be ‘trendology’ from Guyana into the eastern side, into the Tobago Basin and perhaps the Barbados Accretionary Prism (as conjectured in AAPG Memoir 123)?

Intriguingly, Barbados has just announced a new License round...starting on November 1st!

The graphic which leads this short article shows the seismic coverage that is available from Geoex MCG who will be reviewing the opportunities in deep water Trinidad& Tobago, Barbados, Grenada and St Vincent.
