More Scottish floating offshore wind projects boost UK’s energy security

22/08/2022

Welcoming today’s announcement by Crown Estate Scotland that three more floating offshore wind projects have been offered seabed agreements as part of the ScotWind leasing process, adding 2.8GW of potential new capacity, RenewableUK’s CEO Dan McGrail said:

“At a time when everyone is looking for robust solutions to the energy crisis, today’s announcement highlights the fact that scaling up offshore wind is the UK’s main route to energy independence, replacing exorbitantly expensive imported gas with cheap clean power generated in British waters.

“It’s great to see the major ScotWind offshore wind leasing round growing even bigger - it’s now up to 27.6 gigawatts, which is nearly two and half times the size of the UK’s entire current offshore wind fleet. It’s set to play a significant role in enabling the industry to fulfil the Government’s offshore wind target of 50 gigawatts by 2030.

“Each gigawatt installed in the ScotWind process will attract £1.4bn of new investment to the UK, creating thousands of high-quality jobs in innovative technology. We need to see these projects going ahead as swiftly as possible to boost our homegrown capacity, which means addressing barriers in the lengthy consenting process as a matter of urgency”.
