Neoen wins 80 MWp of solar projects in the RESS 2 tender in the Republic of Ireland

25/05/2022
  • Neoen has provisionally won two projects, with a total capacity of around 80 MWp, as part of the RESS 2 call for tenders in Ireland.
  • These two projects are located in County Limerick (Ballinknockane Solar, around 61 MWp) and in County Wicklow (Threecastles Solar, around 19 MWp).
  • The commissioning of the two solar power plants is scheduled for the end of 2025. Neoen will be the owner and long-term operator.
  • These projects significantly strengthen Neoen's Irish portfolio, which already had 53 MW of wind farms in operation and 58 MWp of solar power plants under construction or in the process of being commissioned.

Neoen, one of the main independent producers of exclusively renewable energy in the world, announces its success in the second RESS 2 government call for tenders with the winning of two projects with a total of around 80 MWp: Ballinknockane Solar in County Limerick (around 61 MWp) and Threecastles Solar in County Wicklow (around 19 MWp). The provisional results of the tender were published on May 20, 2022, with the final results to be announced at the end of June.

The commissioning of the two power plants, which will be wholly owned and operated by Neoen, is scheduled for the end of 2025. Together, they will produce around 76 GWh per year, which will supply around 18,000 homes and avoid the emission of more than 24,400 tonnes of CO2 per year.

This success comes just four weeks after the connection of Millvale, Neoen's first Irish solar park, which was among the winners of RESS 1 and is the first large grid-connected ground-mounted solar power plant in Ireland. The two new projects significantly strengthen Neoen's Irish portfolio, which already included three solar farms for a total of 58 MWp under construction (including Millvale), eight wind farms in operation, with a total capacity of 53 MW , and a portfolio of more than 220 MW of solar, wind and battery projects in advanced development.

Cyril Perrin, Managing Director of Neoen Ireland, said:
“I would like to thank all the stakeholders involved for the trust they have placed in us, in particular the landowners and local authorities whose support has been – and will continue to be – essential for the realization of these projects. Present since 2019, we have built a diversified portfolio of solar, wind and storage projects. This new success rewards our efforts and reinforces our desire to play an even more active role in Ireland's energy transition, and thus contribute to achieving its objective of 80% renewable electricity by 2030."

Xavier Barbaro, Chairman and CEO of Neoen, adds:
“I would like to congratulate our Irish team for this new success and for our rapid growth in the Republic of Ireland. We are a real local player and this demonstrates the quality of our projects. But this is only the beginning: we have promising prospects in Ireland. More than ever, renewable energies play a decisive role in competitiveness and energy sovereignty. And Neoen is one of the most dynamic players in making this transition a reality in the seven European countries in which we are already present. »
