AFBE-UK Scotland to hold careers in manufacturing event for graduates

20/05/2022

Diversity and inclusion organisation AFBE-UK Scotland is holding a careers training and recruitment event to help graduates transition into a career in manufacturing.

The Aberdeen-based group is holding the virtual event on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, from 10am to 3pm. The workshop, part of the organisation’s Transition programme, is free to attend and is aimed towards graduates or professionals aged 25 or over who are looking for a career in the manufacturing industry.

The workshop, delivered in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde operated National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) and Equate Scotland, looks to support the transition to a successful career in industry.

The seminar will include information, insights, interview practice, personal branding insights and industry panellist question and answers.

Speakers at the event will include Dr Margi Vilnay, director of public engagement and outreach at the University of Dundee’s School of Science and Engineering; Dr Sumin Kim, project manager at Robert Gordon University’s Energy Transition Institute; Eleanor Tweddell, entrepreneur and author; Sam Soyombo of Skills Development Scotland and others.

The online gathering is part of a series of AFBE-UK Scotland events aimed at bridging the gap between academia and industry for young people, particularly those from under-represented backgrounds looking to pursue a career in the science, engineering, technology and mathematics (STEM) sectors.

Transition has helped thousands of attendees develop their career skills since launching in 2012. Events have been held in Aberdeen and Edinburgh.

Dr Urenna Adegbotolu, Transition Programme Lead, said:
“Our Transition events continue to be very successful over the years to connect companies with young people. We are delighted to be collaborating with NMIS and look forward to the opportunities that will arise from this for young people."

NMIS is transforming the workforce of today and tomorrow through its Manufacturing Skills Academy by providing advanced manufacturing training and development opportunities for people at all levels of their careers.

This online workshop is funded by the Scottish Government and Scottish Funding Council’s National Transition Training Fund (NTTF) and can assist people applying to the NMIS graduate training scheme, which is open to anyone aged 25 and over.

Jennifer MacDonald, Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity Manager, National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) Manufacturing Skills Academy said:
“Our Manufacturing Skills Academy is committed to helping people secure a brighter future within Scotland’s manufacturing industry across fast-growing sectors including space, food and drink and offshore renewables. We’re pleased to be collaborating with AFBE on this workshop and leverage its skills, experience, and networks in this vital area.”
