Launch of Major New Geoscience Conference Series For The Energy Transition

29/10/2021

The Geological Society (‘GS’) and Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain (‘PESGB’) today announce the launch of a major new conference series designed to explore and develop the important contribution of geology and geophysics to the low carbon energy transition. The new Energy Geoscience Conference (‘EGC’) series will be a key forum for sharing geoscientific aspects of energy supply as earth scientists grapple with the subsurface challenges of redesigning the world’s energy system, balancing competing demands in achieving a low carbon future.

The EGC conference series will continue the long-standing role of the GS and PESGB in promoting scientific learning, sharing and collaboration; a philosophy that has led to the geology of the UK Continental Shelf being amongst the best understood and documented of offshore basins worldwide. The conference will address technical challenges and support geoscientists in industry and academia who are researching, exploring and developing renewable energy sources, meeting demand for lower emissions oil and gas, subsurface energy storage and waste product sequestration, both in the UK and internationally.

With Aberdeen’s world-leading role in the energy sector and vision to position itself as a climate positive city helping to lead the world towards net zero, it is the standout UK location to launch the first hybrid (in person/virtual) conference in this exciting new series: EGC1, in the P & J Live conference venue from 16th to 18th May 2023.

Lead convenors Dr Caroline Gill (Shell UK) and Professor John Underhill (Heriot Watt University) commented:
“Geoscience can help find and develop subsurface solutions to energy transition challenges. It underpins secure and sustainable energy and materials supply and subsurface storage solutions. This conference aims to bring together geoscientists to understand and share insights into the role of the subsurface in achieving net zero emissions targets”.
