Finding Petroeum: The Key to reducing GHG Emissions? Actual Measurements!

20/09/2021

David Bamford, Director of Content at Finding Petroleum, reviews the upcoming event, 'The Key to reducing GHG Emissions? Actual Measurements!'

As reported previously, I have taken an in-depth look at this ‘season’s’ Reporting by 6 European Majors and 7 E&Ps with respect to GHG Emissions.

A short Summary:

  • two of the Majors and one of the E&Ps are ‘trying hard’;
  • others are quite vague, ‘trust us’;
  • a minority appear to be pursuing Business as Usual

Above all…

For ‘Bottom Up’ Reporting there is too much reliance on laboratory-based ‘engineering estimates’, only two of the companies have measurement plans….

‘Top Down’ measurement methodologies are emerging that use:

  • Satellites carrying a variety of sensors (LIDAR and InfraRed for example); going from raw to useful data needs atmospheric modelling, Analytics and Machine Learning
  • Ground-based and UAV-borne sensors (especially the new Quantum technology-LIDAR ones)
  • ‘Walkers’ with Optical Gas Imagers, ‘Sniffers’ etc

And the Integration of this multi-physics into a coherent 3D image…of a drilling rig, an offshore platform, a processing plant, a pipeline, a refinery…and other industrial sites such as chemical, cement and steel works.

Our 29th October Lunch’n Think Webinar addresses what can be done with Ground Stations and by ‘Walkers’ (especially operations staff carrying sensors on their PPE): Register here.

I’m happy to offer you a free ‘seat’ at this event; just click on the above link to register.
