Iberdrola signs the lease for the Baltic Eagle operations building

01/09/2021

Iberdrola and the port of Sassnitz sign the lease contract for the new operations and maintenance building that will serve the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm.

Iberdrola and the port of Sassnitz (Fährhafen Sassnitz GmbH) have signed the lease contract for the new operations and maintenance building that will serve the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm, in a ceremony chaired by the minister-president from the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Manuela Schwesig. The agreement marks another important milestone in the offshore wind farm construction program.

During the ceremony, Iris Stempfle, CEO of Iberdrola Renevables Deutschland GmbH, also announced that, on September 1, the company will present a bid for the construction of "Windanker", a new offshore wind farm in the Baltic. The plan is to extend the Baltic hub (currently the 350 MW Wikinger, operational since 2017, and the 476 MW Baltic Eagle under construction) to more than 1 GW by 2026.

"As a world leader in wind power generation, we also take responsibility for shaping the German energy transition in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. With the agreement signed today and our participation in the auction for the construction of the Windanker offshore wind farm, we are committed to creating regional value and to our goal of 1.1 GW by 2026 ", highlighted Iris Stempfle.

To facilitate success, Stempfle noted, the next state government will have to designate more zones for the expansion of renewables at sea and on land, as well as simplify planning procedures. Market design must also change in cooperation with industry to ensure reliable energy prices for the end consumer and stable framework conditions for companies, reducing risks.

Presiding Minister Manuela Schwesig stated:
"In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, we want the German energy transition to be successful. To achieve this, we need more offshore wind farms that generate a large amount of electricity. Iberdrola is already present on our coasts with the Wikinger wind farm . A second major project with the Baltic Eagle will be added in a few years. I am very pleased that planning, operation and maintenance will be carried out again from the port of Mukran. This will create jobs on the island of Rügen and will be a contribution important for the German energy transition."

GREEN INVESTMENTS TO PROMOTE ECONOMIC RECOVERY

Iberdrola believes that the energy transition can be a key driver for the transformation of the industry, the recovery of the green economy and the creation of employment.

With this approach, Iberdrola has launched an important investment plan of 75,000 million euros for the period 2020-2025, with the aim of doubling its renewable capacity and taking advantage of the opportunities created by the energy revolution in the main economies of the world.

After twenty years promoting the energy transition, with investments of more than 120,000 million euros, Iberdrola is a leader in renewable energies, with an installed capacity of more than 33 GW, which makes its park of generating plants one of the cleanest in the world. energy sector.

With CO 2 / kWh emissions already two-thirds lower than the European average, the investment strategy in clean energy and networks will lead Iberdrola to become carbon neutral in Europe by 2030.
