Earth Wind & Power signs LoI with Cloud & Heat Technologies

11/08/2021

First strategic collaboration to develop an innovative and unique solution for energy companies to use excess energy to power HPC Data Centres

Earth Wind & Power (EWP), a leading innovator in creating a sustainable bridge between excess energy and the exponentially growing demand for power for the High Performance Computing industry, today announces it has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) for a Strategic Alliance with Cloud & Heat Technologies (C&H), a specialist in secure and energy-efficient digital infrastructures.

Leveraging the complementary strengths of both firms, as well as their joint commitment to deliver sustainable, cost effective and energy efficient solutions, the partnership aims to develop, deploy and market sustainable digital infrastructures for High Performance Computing (HPC) and other datacentre applications that can be used across a wide variety of markets.

The alliance will benefit from EWP’s expertise in turning excess energy from wind, solar, geo-thermal and gas into power for modular HPC data centres as well as C&H’s strength in developing and operating secure and sustainable digital infrastructures.

For this purpose, EWP will purchase data centre infrastructure from C&H and commission the Dresden-based company to set up, operate and maintain the unit.

By deploying modular and scalable data centres around the world at locations with excess energy, EWP can exploit this energy for HPC and other datacentre services when no other offtake is commercially viable. A unique aspect of EWP’s and C&H’s combined solution is a cutting-edge water- cooling system meaning their units are not restricted by climate conditions and can therefore facilitate datacenter applications globally in extreme conditions that would otherwise not be viable.

EWP’s solution offers energy companies within wind, solar, geo-thermal and fossil fuel markets a powerful and unique ESG solution for utilising their excess energy, while creating new commercial value and enhancing ESG standards. Similarly, host governments can benefit from support for their own net-zero targets, as well as enhanced data sovereignty by increasing sovereign data centre capacity.

"This collaboration is a major important step not only for our two companies, but for the global energy and data centre industry as a whole. By matching the energy surplus of one economy with the energy deficit of the other, we have launched a groundbreaking ESG solution," says Ingvil Smines Tybring-Gjedde, CEO and Co-Founder of Earth Wind & Power and former Norwegian Minister of National Public Security and Deputy Minister of Petroleum and Energy.

"We are very happy about this cooperation, as all partners share the same vision of a sustainable digital future and optimally contribute their respective strengths from the very beginning. This is a joint pioneering achievement that could be replicated in other markets in the future and a great example of what can happen when you work together beyond your own traditional value creation levels. Earth Wind & Power has a huge network and is opening up important new markets for us. This also applies to countries that may be underserved and have insufficient access to compute resources," says Nicolas Röhrs, CEO and Co-Founder of Cloud&Heat Technologies.
