Brazil energy market news and intelligence highlights

The following market intelligence has been compiled and circulated by the Department for International Trade:

  • Casa dos Ventos plans to invest £ 1,2 billion over the next three years in new onshore wind farms in Bahia, in the municipalities of Casa Nova, Morro do Chapéu, Macururé and Várzea Nova. The company signed investment protocols this week with the state government. The first work is expected to start in September, in Morro do Chapéu. [Brasil Energy]
  • The Brazilian Nuclear Industries (INB) finished earlier this month the delivery of the 17th reload for the Angra 2 (1,405 MW) nuclear power plant to Eletronuclear. According to INB, 11 transports were made and 44 fuel elements were delivered. The convoys departed from the INB plant in Resende, in the direction of Angra dos Reis. The next reload to be delivered will be the 27th of Angra 1, scheduled to start in October and to be delivered in June next year. [Brasil Energy]
  • EDP Renovaveis announced on July 15 it is joining forces with Amazon Web Services (AWS) regarding future onshore wind and solar power purchase agreements (PPAs) and the provision of digital services. This agreement will potentially add to a total of 475 MW of such contracts already signed between the parties. In regards to the other portion of the strategic collaboration, AWS will provide cloud, technology and digital services as EDPR’s preferred cloud provider [Renewables Now]
  • The Brazilian Development Bank has approved a £ 227,8 million loan to add 409.2 MW of capacity to two onshore wind power complexes owned by VTRM Energia e Participacoes. With the addition of the new turbines, the wind complexes should be able to generate enough clean power to meet the demand of 800,000 local homes. Commercial operation is scheduled for 2022. [Renewables Now]
  • The president of the Rio Grande do Sul-owned group CEEE, Marco Soligo, said in a press conference after the CEEE-T privatization auction that the event for the sale of CEEE Geração was expected to take place in December of this year. CEEE Geração has five hydroelectric plants, eight SHPCs and two CGHs that it owns 100%, totaling 909.9 MW of installed capacity. In addition, the company owns 343.81 MW in partnerships formed through consortiums or special purpose companies (SPEs), totaling 1,253.71 MW, of which 1,145.57 MW in Rio Grande do Sul.   • Qair Brasil, a subsidiary of French company Qair Internacional, intends to invest £ 5 billion develop a huge green hydrogen project in Brazil’s Ceara state, supplied by offshore wind power. The state government and the energy company signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on developing the 1,216-GW Dragao do Mar offshore wind park and a 2,240-MW electrolysis plant capable of producing 296,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. [Renewables Now]
  • Brazilian telecommunication company Vivo has inaugurated a Distributed Generation biogas plant in Pernambuco state, its first in Brazil's Northeast region. The new facility can produce 18,834 MWh of electricity per year and thus supply over 1,100 of the company's consumer units, including stores, sites and transmission equipment, the subsidiary of Spain's Telefonica SA said. [Renewables Now]
  • [INTERVIEW] How Brazil’s stock exchange is helping energy companies grow - Brazil’s B3 stock exchange in São Paulo recently agreed a partnership with insurer Newe to provide liquidity to the energy market via more accessible guarantee insurance. This is one of the B3 instruments that are designed to help energy companies obtain increased credit to grow their businesses. In this interview, B3’s superintendent of new business, Ana Beatriz Mattos, talks about how generators, traders and consumers can take advantage of these benefits. [BNAmericas]
  • [INTERVIEW] Bento Albuquerque, Brazil’s Minister of Mines and Energy, talks about Brazil's natural capacity for generating electricity from renewable sources and how he plans on boosting the wind and solar industries in the country. He explains that the total estimated expansion for the period 2026 to 2030 is approximately 37 GW, with an average of 7.5 GW/year. He also explained that to stimulate Brazil’s hydrogen market, the National Energy Policy Council has passed resolutions to ensure Brazil’s consistent participation as an exporter and consumer of hydrogen. One of the main resolutions made to this end is the creation of the National Hydrogen Programme, the directives of which are to be published within the next few months. [LatAm Investor]
