Helicopters to explore potential for deep geothermal energy in Germany

18/05/2021

The badenova subsidiary badenovaWÄRMEPLUS is investigating the potential for “deep geothermal energy” in the region around Freiburg. For this, the next important step begins: the phase of geophysical measurements. Specific measures are an aero-magnetic measurement and a gravimetric measurement. With aero-magnetics, a helicopter collects information about the earth's magnetic field in a defined area. This flight began on May 17th.

Various geological investigations are necessary for geothermal projects in order to further condense the data base on all aspects of geological potential and thus to obtain a picture of the subsurface that is as meaningful as possible. This also includes the so-called aero-magnetics by means of helicopter flights. Aero-magnetics is used to record parameters of the natural magnetic field of the earth by flying over the earth's surface.

The helicopter pulls a magnetometer - similar to a pendulum - afterwards. The magnetometer data is digitally recorded and evaluated. The flight will start on Monday, May 17th and should be completed within a week. The campaign is carried out by the experts from terrascan airborne based in Heitersheim. With this examination method there is no interference with the subsoil.
