Erection of the first turbine of NBT’s first Ukrainian wind farm was completed on 18 November, marking an important milestone for the project and the start of a busy period with erection of another 62 turbines. 

Jointly developed by NBT and its French partner Total Eren, Syvash Wind Farm is located in Kherson region in southern Ukraine and projected to generate approximately 850 GWh of electric power a year. 

The project consist of 63 units of Nordex N131-3.9 MW turbines and will be commissioned in 2020. Total investment cost amounts to EUR 374 million, of which EUR 262.6 million comes from a syndicate of European financial institutions led by European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

It is estimated that the project once operational will suffice the power needs of more than 100,000 local families and help reduce about 750,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year. Such environmental and social benefits enabled the project to become the Bronze Winner of the Sustainable Energy category of EBRD’s 2019 Sustainability Awards, issued in May.

As a utility-scale Norwegian wind power developer and investor that focuses on emerging markets like Ukraine, NBT is determined to scale up its Ukrainian pipeline. It is in the process of developing a 792.5 MW wind farm in southeastern Ukraine which it plans to build in three phases.

All of the major permits required for the three phases to be ready for construction are expected to be obtained by the end of 2019. Full operation of the entire wind farm is due to take place in the first half of 2022.
