UK-based engineering firm Doosan Babcock has welcomed the UK Government’s approval of Hinkley Point C as a major step forward in the supply of secure, low-carbon energy for the UK. The company is one of the preferred bidders in the Hinkley Point C nuclear new build programme, working with its partners Cofely Axima and nuclear HVAC (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning) specialist Tunzini Nucleaire in the ACTAN consortium.

The Consortium’s Classified HVAC contract, valued at around £220m and set to last seven and a half years, will involve the design, equipment qualification, procurement, installation and testing of all heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment at Hinkley Point C.

Doosan Babcock with its partners Cofely Endel and SOM (part of the Ortec Group) has also signed a further contract with EDF in France for the design of piping systems for Hinkley Point C.

Doosan Babcock is a major investor in the development of nuclear engineering skills, providing apprenticeships in critical skills such as specialist welding from its Tipton Training School in the West Midlands. It also operates a manufacturing and R&D centre in Renfrew, Scotland, providing essential products and services for the UK’s nuclear energy sector. The company’s engineers currently work on many of the operational and decommissioning nuclear sites around the country.
